Naturopathic Principles
Naturopathic Medicine is defined under the Health Professions Act of Canada as the health profession in which a person provides the services of prevention, assessment and treatment of an individual’s diseases, disorders and conditions using education, naturopathic techniques, therapies or therapeutics to stimulate or support healing processes and promote, maintain or restore the overall health of the individual.
One of the main focuses of Naturopathic Medicine is education, which is so very important to understanding how and why a disease can progress, what one can do about it, how to potentially resolve, restrict or minimize it, and techniques to prevent it completely, potentially resolve it, or prevent it from worsening. Naturopathic Medicine is focused wholistic healthcare where every individual is seen with a special story that affects their health. Understanding the person, instead of simply understanding the dis-ease process is of utmost importance. When time is spent to understand the specific story of an individual, one can teach and guide that individual to their best path of health.
Naturopathic Physicians, licensed in British Columbia, Canada carry a prescriptive license from the University of British Columbia. We provide medicine to the people through a different lens: If a prescription is required/warranted based on best evidence-medicine: a prescription is given at the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time possible, while other body systems are supported with nutritional-based evidence. This includes botanical medicines, neutraceuticals, foods, and more.
Naturopathic Medicine, practiced in British Columbia , Canada is the only form of “Naturopathic Medicine” in Canada that bridges a world between two forms of medicine: Pharmaceuticals (potent laboratory medicines) and those of the Earth Medicines (botanical medicines, ancient foods/”superfoods”, vitamins, minerals, acupuncture, counselling, sweating, dancing, singing/chanting, prayer, reike, energy medicines and vibrational medicines such as drumming… the list is vast, and beautiful…), and how they can best be used to create, and maintain, best health. At this time, any other "Naturopathic Doctor” practicing “Naturopathic Medicine” in Canada does not have the legal scope, under the Health Professions Act of Canada, to prescribe bio-identical hormones or pharmaceuticals.
Naturopathic healing techniques and therapeutics involve, and are not limited to: Nutrition and Neutraceutical supplementation, Botanical Medicines, Acupuncture, Orthomolecular Therapy (Intravenous (IV) Therapy), Homeopathic Medicines, Sauna Therapy, Hydrotherapy, including Colonic Hydrotherapy, Exercise Therapeutics, Massage and Naturopathic Spinal Manipulation, Naturopathic Counselling, Injection Therapies (Botox, PRP/Prolotherapy), Laser Therapies.
The main intention of a Naturopathic Physician (BC) or Naturopathic Doctor (AB) is to teach you how to live the longest, healthiest and happiest life. If you are physically located in British Columbia or the Yukon, Canada, and are required/needed/there is strong evidence to support the treatment of the particular dis-ease process you are carrying at the time of interview, based on clinical evidence (clinical analysis including medical intake, laboratory, physical measurements), with a pharmaceutical, you will be given the prescription for this pharmaceutical, alongside the other recommended “natural techniques” to optimize your health in both the immediate future, and for a future of longevity.
In Alberta, and most other provinces of Canada, you must also go see a medical doctor (MD) or nurse practitioner (NP) or, in some cases, a pharmacist (RPh.) if your particular dis-ease process is requiring pharmaceutical care.
Longevity and health are the absolute core values of Naturopathic Medicine. The view we hold inherently as leaders of health, and healthcare in British Columbia, is that there is a natural tendency to health if all barriers to health are removed. We support all systems of the health of the human as we recognize health as a unified process of the whole person. We teach "health” with the strongest evidence-based medicine in the current times, including the ancient knowledge and techniques such as those of plant medicines.
